Hello and welcome!

Our journey in Morocco starts in 2022, with the 1st Minders working remotely from Casablanca. As the team started to grow, we started looking into the tech scene in Morocco, visiting regularly and organising a few events; with that came the decision to go ahead with opening Mindera Morocco.
 

Mindera Morocco became a reality in March 2023, with 11 developers working from all around the country - Casablanca, Layoune, Rabat, Teouan…the list goes on. Focused on building products for our clients from a diverse range of industries. Our Minders are supported by our tech stack, working in collaboration with our clients as a team.

While our office in Casablanca may be small, our ambitions are not. As we take our first steps in Morocco, we're not just building a company; our goal is to create a truly unique place for developers to work on amazing projects, with a great environment, flexibility and purpose. 
 

But it's not all about work; we believe in the importance of a supportive community. We have fun together, whether at work, during Mindera trips, or through our engagement in meaningful social projects.

We’re Implementing Self-Proposal Salary In The UK

We’re always looking at how we can try something new or do something differently at [Mindera](https://mindera.com/). Change is good and it’s something we embrace with open arms.
 

Most of the time, these ideas or proposals come from our “**Minders**”. Every member of the Mindera team is known as a Minder.
 

About two years ago, our team in Porto began implementing self-proposal salaries. The goal, as explained in [this blog](https://mindera.com/blog/a-story-about-salaries-at-mindera/) by one of our Minders, Sofia Reis, was to:
 

“Continually upgrade everyone’s salary in order to follow each person’s development, for as long as they are at Mindera. We were adamant for this process to be connected to people’s skills and capabilities instead of their performance evaluation.”
 

Now that our UK team, based in Leicester has grown, we are trialling self-proposal salary here for the very first time.
 

## What is self-proposal salary?

Self-proposal salary allows an individual to make a proposal for their own salary. I should also point out that this is optional for everyone, no one is required to make a salary proposal if they do not wish to do so.
 

Any proposal that is made, is submitted in complete confidence. Only the founders and directors of the company are able to see what the individual has proposed.
 

We’ve also tried to go take this one step further, so that an individual can make a proposal on behalf of a colleague.
 

When self-salary proposal started in Porto, around 20 people joined in with the initiative. That number has now swelled to more than three times that amount.
 

And, as Pedro Vicente explains in his [follow-up blog](https://mindera.com/blog/a-story-about-salaries-at-mindera-part-2/) to Sofia’s, which delves even deeper into self-proposal salary:
 

“Mindera did not implode… the world did not end.”
 

## Where are we now with self-proposal salary?

When I first heard of the concept of self-salary proposal, I had mixed feelings on whether it would work here in the UK.
 

We don’t really talk openly about salaries here, it’s a very private matter and quite a closed-book subject.
 

How would people here feel about it? Would they be open to discussing it? Would they want to find out more information about it? Would they be interested in joining it?
 

That, of course, is for each individual to decide. From my perspective, one of the things I like about self-salary proposal is that it brings people together.

It is very much an open process, in terms of everyone in the company knowing when their salary review is taking place. In other salary models, it is most likely that only the individual who has received a rise will know that the salary review had taken place, while individuals who had not qualified for a salary increase may not be aware.
 

This has a downside, as not everyone who made a proposal for a salary increase would receive a salary increase during the current salary cycle.
 

That means an individual may be left with a feeling of rejection.
 

However, at Mindera, we aim to undertake salary reviews every quarter. Doing this ensures that all Minders will receive a salary increase at least once a year.
 

So, self-salary proposal is still very much being trialled here in the UK and it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Today we are chatting with Samuel Clarke, frontend developer at Mindera UK — a rapidly expanding software company situated in Leicester city centre.
 

## How did you get started as an engineer/developer?

“When I was 25, I was on JSA (Jobseeker’s Allowance) and lacking in direction. I bought a book about Java programming for beginners and found it very interesting. A local company was advertising that they are looking for junior developers. I thought I might as well give it a go and applied!”
 

## What technology/tools do you use to fulfil your potential in your role?

“I am currently a Frontend Web Developer, so I use any tools related to JavaScript.
 

“I mostly use an advanced text editor (VS Code),Node.JS, Webpack, Babel, CSS modules, and React.”


## What programming languages/frameworks can you work with? Can you describe your experience with them?

“When it comes to programming languages, I use React a lot — if I need to mess about with the DOM) — nice and simple. It has become my go-to framework at home as well. My days of messing about with the DOM directly are over for now!
 

“An old legacy project that I had worked on used AMD modules with Require.JS, which I liked for the wrong reasons — the code was a shanty town labyrinth of a mess!”

## If you could master one technology this year, what would it be?

“I am currently reading a book about OpenCV for video processing in C, so mastering that this year would be great!
 

“I am also experimenting with the Web Audio API for writing procedural music — there are a few ‘avant-garde’ and electronic ideas that I want to get done before the end of the year.”
 

## What skills are required to be a successful coder?

“Good question! I feel that the best programmers I have met have a good mind for logically working out problems — but if you are dedicated, this is something that can be learnt!
 

“I have met a lot of ‘theoretically solid’ devs that know a lot about new technologies, but when it comes to actually writing code they over-complicate things and make a lot of simple logic errors.”
 

## What advice would you give to people who are interested in a career at Mindera?

“Mindera is a great place to work — go for it!”
 

## How do you achieve a work-life balance at Mindera?

“At Mindera, it is easy. You are not stuck at your desk from 9 to 5. Do you need to do something important during traditional work hours? Tell your team and get on with it. Do not feel like leaving the house for whatever reason? Work from home and spend time with the cat.
 

“Sometimes, if I cannot sleep, I will do some work in the middle of the night and then work less the next day. As long as the work is done and your team is happy, you can be very flexible with your time.”

It is day two of National Coding Week! Similarly to our front-end developer post, we’ll be sharing some of the thoughts of one of our Minders to show you how they started, the skills they’re proud of, and the tech they enjoy using.

Today we are chatting with Michal Pochowski, a highly experienced Backend Developer at Mindera UK — a rapidly expanding software company situated in Leicester city centre.
 

## How did you get started as an engineer/developer?

“I started as an engineer/developer when I was about 8–9 years old by playing with some plain HTML and creating simple games in a game-maker application.
 

“I started to take becoming an engineer/developer more seriously when I was 17 years old, mainly by reading some books about Java and writing programs.”
 

## What technology/tools do you use to fulfil your potential in your role?

“I mainly use IntelliJ IDEA. IDE is great because it has everything integrated within it, such as Spring framework support, DB connection, code debugging, version control system, built-in terminal, HTTP requests tool, and many more.”
 

## What programming languages/frameworks can you work with? Can you describe your experience with them?

“**Back end:** I prefer using Java due to a number of reasons such as having a clear syntax, it’s fully object-oriented, it includes functional programming, a great standard library, a huge community, and much more.
 

“For web development work, Spring Boot is one of the best frameworks that provides plenty of out-of-the-box features, such as security, dependency injection, ORM Repositories, etc.
 

“**Front end:** I prefer using the Angular framework, because it is very comprehensive with plenty of features, such as animations, reactive form, progressive web app support, observables by default, dependency injection, great testing libraries, and natural TypeScript support.”
 

## If you could master one technology this year, what would it be?

“Artificial Intelligence — I’m currently learning all about it.”

## What skills are required to be a successful coder?

“I think a successful developer should have conceptual and logical thinking skills, good attention to detail, good math and algorithm skills, but also a lot of patience.”

What advice would you give to people who are interested in a career at Mindera?
 

“I’d recommend buying some books about technology that you are interested in. It might be worth doing some research first This is because there are many technologies that are out of date and many technologies are very new (“Buzz words”) and often they turn out to be not-that-great in the end.
 

“For example, NoSQL databases are very much in fashion, but from my work experience, we very often found that SQL was better and that NoSQL has many drawbacks. They are great in some situations, but they are not golden for everything. So, it’s worth doing some research, asking some people, reading some not-technology-sponsored articles, and, based on that, choosing which technology/language/framework you want to learn.
 

“Apart from theoretical knowledge, it’s also very important to write some programs to practice skills learned.”

## How do you achieve a work-life balance at Mindera?

“I think I’ve got a great wife that helps me a lot. Besides that, I belong to a great team full of awesome people.
 

“I have a longer commute than most people at the business. However, Mindera’s flexibility makes it possible for me to work on the train. From time to time I work from home, which is also very useful for me because I’m travelling from quite far.”

## How did you get started as an engineer/developer?

“I started to learn about software development three years ago when I decided that I wanted to start coding!”
 

## What technology/tools do you use to fulfil your potential in your role?

“I use loads of different technologies and tools on a daily basis. It all depends on what problems I need to solve. My favourite tool for web development is VSCode, as I work mostly with JavaScript.”

“From a programming language point of view, I enjoy working with JavaScript, Java, and a bit of Haskell.
 

“From a programming framework point of view, I am most comfortable working with React, Node.js, and Java Spring Boot.
 

“I use JavaScript, React, and Node.js on a daily basis at Mindera. As for Java, I used to use it to learn about programming at the beginning of my programming journey. I sometimes still use it for side projects.”
 

## If you could master one technology this year, what would it be?

“TypeScript!”
 

## What skills are required to be a successful coder?

“I believe that the most important skills in this field are problem-solving, communication, and willingness to learn.”

“If you want to work here, just apply! If you feel that you lack some kind of skills then start working towards learning them and apply after that. That’s how I did it.”

It’s another day of National Coding Week! It’s already day four and it feels like this week is zooming by. 
 

Today we thought we’d chat to one of our incredibly talented female backend developers at Mindera UK, Veronica Carrasco, about the skills needed in the role, her favourite tech, and her future goals in acquiring new skills.
 

“At Mindera, we believe that there is nothing that women in tech cannot accomplish. This industry is very diverse. We’re attracting more and more women.” — Hetal Kurji-Evans, Director at Mindera UK.
 

## How did you get started as an engineer/developer?

“When I was at university, I used to enjoy the programming courses/subjects more than others, maybe because they require problem-solving skills. As soon as I graduated from my BSc in computer science, I knew that was the type of job I wanted to do. Also, to enhance my skill set, I completed an MSc in web applications and services with industry.”
 

## What technology/tools do you use to fulfil your potential in your role?

“To fulfil my potential in my role, I must have knowledge of Java technologies. To be precise, I use Java 10 and Spring Boot as frameworks for the backend and React.JS for the frontend.”
 

## What programming languages/frameworks can you work with?

“Since graduating, the main programming language that I have been working with regularly is Java (for more than 10 years now), so I’m very familiar with Java technologies. Not only did I use Java throughout university, I also had the opportunity to teach an object-oriented programming module using Java.
 

“Something that I particularly like about Java is its wide developer community, which is always a plus when picking a programming language for implementing a solution.
 

“Since I started working at Mindera, I’ve had the opportunity to learn JavaScript technologies and I now have experience in React.JS.”

## If you could master one technology this year, what would it be?

“I would like to master the AWS Solutions Architect certification and gain some experience in DevOps. I’m interested in this area because as a developer it is fundamental for me to know how provisioning and managing infrastructure works in AWS, as well as setting the whole pipeline for automating the delivery of software products.”
 

## What skills are required to be a successful coder?

“In my opinion, a successful coder should be great at problem-solving by being able to identify the different scenarios that need to be covered when implementing a solution. Also, coders should be able to learn by themselves so that they are always up-to-date with the latest technologies (IT never stands still).”
 

## What advice would you give to people who are interested in a career at Mindera?

“The key advice I would give for people interested in having a career at Mindera is to be good at time management and self-organisation — since Mindera is a flat organisation.
 

“Also, it is important to be willing to learn and adapt to different projects since we work with different clients.”
 

## How do you achieve a work-life balance at Mindera?

“Mindera allows everyone to have the opportunity to have flexible working hours. This includes the option of working from home when the need arises. This flexibility is viable, as we have different ways of staying connected e.g. Slack, Zoom, etc... Communication is key at Mindera!”

Today we’ll be talking to Dan Jordan — one of our frontend developers at Mindera UK — a rapidly expanding software company situated in Leicester city centre. Who better to get advice from?
 

## How did you get started as an engineer/developer?

“My first introduction to web development was as a 10-year-old using MS FrontPage to build a website that listed cheat codes for computer games. This experience must’ve been terrible because I didn’t touch coding again until I was 18.
 

“Whilst at University I did some extra modules in web design and Java. Along with constantly writing CSS to change my MySpace page < 3 they helped me realise I wanted to work with software and the web.”

“The technology and tools I use are my MacBook, VSCode, and the Herman Miller chair that Mindera provides all employees.”

## What programming languages/frameworks can you work with? Can you describe your experience with them?

“I mainly work with JavaScript, both on the frontend and the backend. I’ve been working with JavaScript for most of my career. I love JavaScript for its simplicity but also for how powerful it has become with the release of TypeScript.”
 

## What skills are required to be a successful coder?

“I think empathy is one of the most important skills for a programmer. Every day we are building software for other people, so understanding their needs is incredibly important.”
 

## What advice would you give to people who are interested in a career at Mindera?

“Apply! We love meeting new people and learning about their experiences. If you attend local meet-ups, you may meet some of us and we’re always open to talk about Mindera.”
 

## How do you achieve a work-life balance at Mindera?

“By design — Mindera gives you a work-life balance. Self-organisation allows us to set our own workload and we are responsible for getting that done.”

Happy Day 6 of National Coding Week! We’ve been posting every single day for the entire week. So, if you’re not up-to-date with this series, you should definitely check out our other posts.
 

Throughout this week, we’ve been chatting to some of the software engineers at Mindera UK — a rapidly expanding software company situated in Leicester city centre. We’ve talked about the 
different skills, technologies, and languages that are essential in the industry.
 

Today we’re talking to James Smith, a backend developer at Mindera UK. He has provided a couple of lists of the tools, technologies, languages, and frameworks he uses! What are your favourites?

## How did you get started as an engineer/developer?

“I used to be an accountant. I would get to the office early in the morning to work on various programming exercises. From there on, I completed a master’s degree!
 

“While studying, I looked for small freelance jobs in the industry so that I could build up my experience. That’s how it all started. And it worked!”
 

## What technologies/tools do you use to fulfil your potential in your role?

1. “IntelliJ
2. Docker

4. Slack”

“Although we have the freedom to work from home, I prefer to go into the office to have mental separation between work life and home life.
 

“We also have the freedom to manage our own time. This means that we don’t have to work from 9 to 5. We can work when we feel the most productive. This fits well into my daily life, allowing me to live my life while being productive at work.”

Becoming A Frontend Developer

It’s (sadly) the last day of National Coding Week, meaning it’s the end of this series. That doesn’t mean we won’t be posting. We definitely will, so keep your eyes peeled.
 

Today we’ll be chatting to one of our frontend developers about his journey to becoming one. We hope this inspires others to continue advancing their skills within the tech industry!
 

We're chatting with Pedro Fidalgo, Frontend Developer at Mindera UK — a rapidly expanding software company situated in Leicester city centre.
 

## How did you get started as an engineer/developer?

“I started coding in high school. I kept doing it in college but it only got serious when I decided to dedicate myself to it 100% and started to learn JavaScript at home.”
 

## What technology/tools do you use to fulfil your potential in your role?

“I mainly use React.JS here. Sometimes I bring Redux into my projects as well.
 

“I also feel comfortable using Node.JS with Express. The tool I use the most is VSCode (Visual Studio Code) for sure. It’s my favourite IDE (integrated development environment) and it’s super lightweight!”

## What programming languages/frameworks can you work with?

“My programming language of choice is JavaScript, 100%. I just love its versatility. You can do both front end and back end with it, so it’s amazing because you can know a language and work as a frontend and backend developer. I can work with React.JS, and Express on top of Node.JS.”
 

## Can you describe your experience with them?

“I totally love React.JS. I love its modularity and it’s easy to use. It makes your life super easy because it’s easy to maintain in a big team.”
 

## If you could master one technology this year, what would it be?

“I want to keep improving my back end skills, so for me this means improving my Node.JS knowledge.”

## What skills are required to be a successful coder?

“In my opinion, the most important “skill” is to be passionate about what you’re doing. If you’re super passionate about it, you’ll eventually become a skilful developer.
 

“The second most important skill for me is to be curious. If you’re curious you’ll always want to learn more and understand how stuff works.
 

“So, for me, those two are the most important “skills” to be a developer. You can be super good with numbers but if you’re not passionate and curious about what you do, you could end up being an average developer.”
 

## What advice would you give to people who are interested in a career at Mindera?

“My advice would be to understand the basics of your tools. I see tons of developers who barely have knowledge of JavaScript and just jump to learn React.JS. Then in the future, they will shoot themselves in the foot because they lack basic knowledge because they wanted to arrive at the end of the road by not going through the process of walking on the road.
 

“Then just apply. Some people are super scared of the recruitment process.
 

“I can tell you, at Mindera, you’ll meet amazing people, and your interview will be super fun and relaxed! You’ll end up learning some stuff too!”
How do you achieve a work-life balance at Mindera?
 

“I love that Mindera cares about our wellbeing. So, if you’re not feeling okay, you know you will have the support of your team if you take a sick day.
 

“Alternatively, there is flexibility to start work a little later in the day if you need to.
 

“Sometimes it’s hard to switch off after you leave work because you’re always thinking of how to solve that problem or bug. But you have to learn to switch off and enjoy life, and then come back the next day with a fresh mind.”

Business hierarchy is something we do very differently at Mindera. Well, in fact, we have no hierarchy at all.
 

We understand how that could be a bit difficult to understand. What does this mean? Why is that a good thing? That is why we have asked [Hetal Kurji](https://www.linkedin.com/in/hetal-kurji-evans-b625b27/), Director at Mindera UK, to explain it all to you.
 

## What does business hierarchy mean?

“Business hierarchy allows organisations to define different roles with designated responsibilities and accountability depending on those roles.
 

“It also presents itself within career development. In most businesses, the higher in the hierarchy ladder you are the more power you are given to make decisions, provide input, and succeed. As you can imagine, that can bring businesses several challenges. For example, employees not having a voice and therefore having unmotivated employees. That’s just one example.”
 

## Why do businesses have a hierarchy?

“Usually, businesses have a hierarchy in place to provide well-defined responsibilities to individuals. This is seen as a way of making sure everybody knows what their responsibilities are, what accountability they have, and, therefore, having more clarity among their employees.
 

“In some cases, it is also used as a career development tool.”

## Why is not having hierarchy good in a business?

“At Mindera, we currently have no hierarchy. Yes, we have business owners and natural leaders due to their skillset, but they have not been appointed.
 

“If leaders merge naturally, that’s absolutely fine. However, having worked in corporate businesses with a hierarchical structure before, I believe having a flat structure is much better for employee productivity and wellbeing.
 

“I can honestly say that the individuals at Mindera have a voice and are, therefore, empowered to make decisions. They are welcome to contribute along any step of the way, take a leading role on what matters most to them and their team, and to work together to come to conclusions.
 

“At Mindera, individuals are treated as humans, because that’s what we all are. They are not just “employees”.
 

“The exposure our Minders get at Mindera often surprises them after not managing to get that freedom to express their opinions in other companies that they worked at for years.”
