Cyber criminals are embracing AI and The National Cyber Security Centre says that while AI isn't necessarily creating new attack vectors, it's making the existing ones more effective.
Take voice phishing and phishing emails. These are often written manually, resulting in spelling and grammatical errors creeping in that make them easier to spot. Well, AI fixes all of that instantly, immediately making them more convincing.
The good news? Retailers are also using AI to defend better against attack. At Mindera we’ve seen one client, for example, monitor the dark web for messages. That’s because a lot of people who attack businesses rarely meet face to face. They only chat online. And often anonymously. So, they frequently use dark web forums to chat about attack strategies because of the anonymity they provide.
AI gives retailers the ability to scan these forums to detect which businesses are being talked about as potential victims and whether hackers have gained access to their systems. This can act as a critical early warning and businesses can respond appropriately.
It’s also possible to test how well your business would cope with a cyberattack using AI. This involves AI tools hacking into your systems to identify vulnerabilities that could be exploited by cyber criminals, and then help fix them.
AI-powered security testing also covers code analysis and fraud risk tools. Essentially taking existing algorithms and validating them with AI. Or getting AI to enhance existing security measures to provide extra assurance.
A small number of organisations have even got AI agents carrying out autonomous cyber defence. This is more in the government space right now, but as adoption increases it’s sure to be used by retailers. This is essentially where an agent becomes part of your security team helping you detect and protect your business.
