Happy Day 6 of National Coding Week! We’ve been posting every single day for the entire week. So, if you’re not up-to-date with this series, you should definitely check out our other posts.

Throughout this week, we’ve been chatting to some of the software engineers at Mindera UK — a rapidly expanding software company situated in Leicester city centre. We’ve talked about the different skills, technologies, and languages that are essential in the industry.

Today we’re talking to James Smith, a backend developer at Mindera UK. He has provided a couple of lists of the tools, technologies, languages, and frameworks he uses! What are your favourites?

How did you get started as an engineer/developer?

“I used to be an accountant. I would get to the office early in the morning to work on various programming exercises. From there on, I completed a master’s degree!

“While studying, I looked for small freelance jobs in the industry so that I could build up my experience. That’s how it all started. And it worked!”

What technologies/tools do you use to fulfil your potential in your role?

  1. “IntelliJ
  2. Docker
  3. Postman
  4. Slack”

“Currently I work with:

  1. Spring (Java 10)
  2. Laravel (PHP 7.2)
  3. React (JavaScript)”

What skills are required to be a successful coder?

  1. “Ability to learn new things quickly
  2. Patience
  3. Attention to detail”

How do you achieve a work-life balance at Mindera?

“Although we have the freedom to work from home, I prefer to go into the office to have mental separation between work life and home life.

“We also have the freedom to manage our own time. This means that we don’t have to work from 9 to 5. We can work when we feel the most productive. This fits well into my daily life, allowing me to live my life while being productive at work.”
