FanDuel modernises systems to fuel growth

Freeing a major US mobile betting operator from legacy constraints.

Mindera’s ability to quickly scale teams and deliver on aggressive timelines has been crucial to our modernisation success.

Vivian Lam, Head of Tech, FanDuel Racing

The challenge

Leading US sportsbook business and premier mobile sports betting operator FanDuel boasts over 12 million users and continues to grow rapidly. This is placing an increasing strain on its legacy IT systems, threatening the company’s agility. To maintain and grow its market position, FanDuel recognised the pressing need to modernize its systems and accelerate migration to standardized, scalable platforms. It was also important to review the cost-effectiveness of incumbent technologies and switch to alternatives that will deliver more impact and value where necessary.

To achieve this successfully, a number of key challenges had to be overcome. First, DevOps engineers carrying out the modernization and migration had to be skilled in FanDuel’s multiple legacy systems powering the different business areas. These include Racing, Fantasy Sports, Sportsbook and Core Products and Experiences (or CPE, which runs user logins, sign-ups, deposits, withdrawals and promotions), each of which has their own non-standardised tech stack. The technical team also had to be able to use the diverse set of tools deployed across the various business areas.

The solution

FanDuel asked its longstanding technology partner Mindera to manage the business-critical transformation. Key was Mindera’s ability to build high-quality multi-skilled teams quickly and cost effectively, along with its experience and expertise in delivering scalable and repeatable migration processes from legacy systems.

The significantly different migration requirements of FanDuel’s legacy domain systems made the project particularly complex and challenging.

The chosen strategy was to migrate all FanDuel’s services to AWS Kubernetes. This was due to the scalability and cost optimisation capabilities of the AWS Cloud, along with the ability of Kubernetes to automate application configuration, while maintaining and tracking resource allocation. FanDuel also wanted its internally built Developer Portal to be universally adopted across the business.

The significantly different migration requirements of FanDuel’s legacy domain systems made the project particularly complex and challenging. This was compounded by the evolving needs of FanDuel’s products currently under development. Meanwhile, the highly seasonable nature of the business meant there was very little flexibility with deadlines.

The results

The migration is currently ongoing and on track. Some early successes have already been achieved on schedule across the different business areas despite the major challenges. As of October 2025:

  • All Fantasy Sports services migration development was finalized, with eight of 37 services successfully migrated to production.
  • All 121 Racing services were migrated to lower environments, are currently under testing and expected to be migrated by January 2026.
  • CPE development was finalised, with one of 16 region services already in production.

The Mindera and FanDuel teams will be working closely over the coming months to maintain this momentum and complete the successful migration as quickly as possible to help future-proof the business for years to come.

Commenting on the project, Vivian Lam, Head of Tech, FanDuel Racing, said: "Migrating our diverse legacy systems to AWS Kubernetes while maintaining business continuity during peak racing seasons required exceptional coordination. Mindera’s ability to quickly scale teams and deliver on aggressive timelines has been crucial to our modernisation success."
